God Reigns Supreme

The storm rages on.

Creation forms with chaos,

Don’t let her fool you.

The creation accounts in Genesis 1 and Psalm 74, as well as the creation account in the Ancient Near East story Enuma Elish, are filled with descriptive images. These texts detail how the universe was created. There are many similarities between them. People in the world like to discuss and battle how the world was created, although Christian's will fight for the biblical truth of Creation and they should. 

I think chaos is still a problem in the world. As Timothy K. Beal pointed out in his book Religion and It’s Monsters, “Perhaps it takes a chaos monster to kill a chaos monster.” Beal describes the way monsters are lurking in the biblical texts, put there by God himself. Did God create chaos, or did it come because of the fall?

One of my favorite quotes of Friedrich Nietzsche, "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster."  There are monsters everywhere, in places we don't expect them to be. Developing discernment is critical. How do we make sure this happens? We surround ourselves with the right people and we fill our minds with the right things. 

I watched a video lecture of Dr. Deena Grant in college, she said, “we must learn the ancient Near Eastern themes to understand how our God Reigns Supreme.” I was waiting for a concept I could use to tie the things I am learning in my studies together. Her comment was a turning piece of information. The ability to bring everything back to my one true north. My God reigns supreme. There are all kinds of accounts of knowledge in the world. Chaos is everywhere. I must stay confident that God is in control. 

There are storms, creation can be in disarray with everything I’ve been taught and with people questioning whether God should be called; him, she or simply (never simply) God. God is supreme and that’s the most important thing! Do you know Him? Do you want to?
