PureTalk 26-5 | Attachment and the Heart of God

Why We Were Created for Secure Love

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to trust relationships so easily while others constantly fear being abandoned? Or maybe you've found yourself wondering why it's difficult to believe God truly loves you, even though you know the Bible says He does.

The answer may have more to do with attachment than you realize.

Attachment is the emotional bond we form with the people who care for us. From the moment we're born, we are wired for connection. We learn whether the world is safe, whether people can be trusted, and whether we are worthy of love through the relationships we experience.

When caregivers consistently respond with love, comfort, and protection, we begin to develop what psychologists call secure attachment. We learn that when we're afraid, someone comes. When we hurt, someone cares. We discover that love is dependable.
Unfortunately, not everyone has that experience.

Some people grow up fearing abandonment. Others learn to rely only on themselves because vulnerability has never felt safe. Still others find themselves longing for closeness while simultaneously fearing it because the people who were supposed to provide comfort also caused pain.

These patterns are not character flaws. They're often the result of the relationships that shaped us.

The Story of Scripture Is a Story of Relationship

Long before psychologists began studying attachment, Scripture revealed something profound about the human heart.

After creating Adam, God declared, "It is not good for the man to be alone."

Long before sin entered the world. Before there was shame or suffering,

God recognized that humanity was created for relationship.

In fact, the entire biblical story is one of God pursuing His people.

He walked with Adam and Eve in the garden. He called Abraham into covenant. He faithfully led Israel through the wilderness. God sent His Son to dwell among us. And through the Holy Spirit, He continues to be present with us today.

The Bible is not simply a collection of rules.

It is the story of a God who continually invites people into relationship with Himself.

Jesus Reveals the Heart of Secure Love

One of my favorite things about Jesus is the way people responded to Him. Children ran toward Him. The broken found hope in Him. Those rejected by society discovered acceptance in His presence.

Jesus didn't manipulate people into following Him.

He invited them. He offered truth wrapped in grace. He corrected without condemnation and restored those who failed.

Think about Peter. After denying Jesus three times, Peter expected shame. Instead, Jesus met him with breakfast, conversation, forgiveness, and a renewed calling.

That is what secure love looks like. It doesn't ignore failure. Secure love restores relationship.

Our Experiences Can Shape How We See God

One of the greatest challenges we face is that our earthly relationships often become the lens through which we view our heavenly Father.

Many of us have experienced rejection, so we may assume God is disappointed with us.

If we experieced inconsistency our lives, we may wonder if God will leave us too.

If we've learned that love must be earned, we may spend our lives trying to perform for God rather than simply resting in His grace.

But Scripture gently invites us to replace those distorted lenses with the truth of God's character.

His love is not based on our performance.

His faithfulness does not depend on our perfection.

His presence is not withdrawn when life becomes difficult.

He is the secure foundation our hearts have always longed for.

Becoming a Safe Place for Others

As we experience God's faithful love, something beautiful begins to happen.

We become safer people.

God’s faithfulness helps our marriages become healthier.

We begin to see our friendships grow deeper.

Our families experience greater peace.

The more we experience God’s faithful love, our churches become places where hurting people can belong.

Healing doesn't stop with us.

It flows through us.

As followers of Christ, we are invited to reflect the same steady, dependable love that God has shown us.

A Simple Reflection

This week, take a moment to ask yourself:

When You picture God, what emotions immediately come to mind?

Peace?

Fear?

Comfort?

Distance?

Spend time reading the Gospels and notice how Jesus interacted with people.

Does your picture of God match the heart of Christ?

Sometimes the greatest healing begins when we allow Scripture, not our past experiences, to shape our understanding of who God truly is.

Because the deepest longing of every human heart isn't simply to be loved.

It's to know that love is secure.

And in Christ, it is.
